Could long-term decline in number of abortions in US be coming to an end?

While the number of abortions procured in the US has steadily declined in recent decades, recent data indicate that this decline may be slowing as the use of chemical abortions rises.

The Charlotte Lozier Institute, the research arm of the pro-life organization Susan B. Anthony List, issued a report this month that analyzed the 2017 abortion figures released by 37 states.

Chuck Donovan, president of Charlotte Lozier Institute, told CNA that 2018 data from six states indicate a continuance of the increasing use of chemical abortions.

“What we may be seeing is that, through the promotion of chemical abortions and increasing the range of distribution … the long-term decline could be coming to an end,” he said.

The reported stated that in 2017 more than 470,000 abortions occurred in 37 states and that 39% of these were chemically induced. Out of 31 states, it highlighted an increased tendency to procure chemical abortions, and, out of 25 states, it mapped the trend of these chemical procedures from 2008 to 2017.

“Since 2008, total abortions among these 25 states have declined by 23 percent, while chemical abortions have increased by 68 percent. Between 2015 and 2017, total abortions fell by three percent, while chemical abortions rose by almost 20 percent,” the report stated.

Donovan said the trend follows the abortion industry’s push for telemedicine. He said chemical abortives have a wider range of distribution than a medical associate at a physical clinic.

  1. St. Christopher says

Abortion must become illegal, the recognized taking of a life. Satan, with his angelic intelligence, is far too powerful for Mankind to be successful in reducing abortions; he will certainly find a way to get the upper hand. People must have True Faith. And, society must be recognized to have the authority to put Christian principles to practical work by proclaiming that the taking of a life within the womb is the same as murdering a living person. But, people love sex and abhor limits on their ability to have same. Just think, if this is taken to its logical conclusion, then only sex within man-woman marriage will be legally tolerable to society. Ahhh, well, people may believe that sin is poison, but realize that we are all its…

The lukewarm lip service opposition to any abortion, whether surgically or chemically induced will continue to be tolerated. Just look here:

It would not be outside the realm of possibility that out Church leaders are keeping quiet in hopes of a leniency of state investigations into clerical abuse.

Opposition to abortion logically requires opposition to IVF. There is no moral difference between killing/discarding a human being in utero and killing/discarding a human being in vitro. Good luck getting IVF banned.

The heart of this whole problem, is a refusal to accept Christian morality. Pro-lifers have always placed the emphasis of their outreach only on saving babies’ lives. They’ve always said that their contemporaries were too rebellious, and would never listen to anyone who mentioned excellent Christian teachings to live by– self-control, chastity, respect for the girl that you date, and that conjugal intimacy is meant for a lifelong Marriage. Without the Church and society upholding Christian morality– and kids engaging in “free” sex– the crimes of abortion will continue.
