“The Church will spare no effort”

With his hands visibly shaking, Pope Francis spoke directly to abusive clergy, telling them to prepare to face justice, both human and divine

Pope Francis strongly condemned clerical sex abuse in his annual Christmas speech to the Roman Curia Friday, promising that the Church leadership will never again cover-up abuse or treat such cases lightly.

“Let it be clear that before these abominations the Church will spare no effort to do all that is necessary to bring to justice whosoever has committed such crimes. The Church will never seek to hush up or not take seriously any case,” Pope Francis said in Vatican’s City’s Apostolic Palace Dec. 21.

“It is undeniable that some in the past, out of irresponsibility, disbelief, lack of training, inexperience, or spiritual and human short-sightedness, treated many cases without the seriousness and promptness  that was due. That must never happen again. This is the choice and the decision of the whole Church,” he continued.

The 40 minute address to the cardinals and members of the Roman Curia largely focused on the “scourges of abuse and infidelity.”

The pope delivered a decisive message to those “consecrated men, ‘the Lord’s anointed’, who today “abuse the vulnerable, taking advantage of their position and their power of persuasion.”

With his hands visibly shaking as he read from his prepared text, the pope addressed abusive clergy directly, telling them to prepare to face justice.

“To those who abuse minors I would say this: convert and hand yourself over to human justice, and prepare for divine justice,” Pope Francis said.

“Remember the words of Christ: ‘Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of scandals! For it is necessary that scandals come, but woe to the man by whom the scandal comes!’” he added.

The Holy Father’s instructions to those who are guilty:

“To those who abuse minors I would say this: convert and hand yourself over to human justice, and prepare for divine justice.”

Does he actually believe they will turn themselves in?

  2. Time for Francis to ‘kick – – – and take names’. In this case, red and purple hats. Since the Pope appoints Cardinals and Bishops, I presume he can ‘unappoint’ them for gross malfeasance. Failure to do so leads only to the growth of former Catholics as a religious group.

  3. “Will never cover up again” yes they will as long as the same people are in the positions they hold. Does this also apply to him ? Yet another off the wall knee jerk reaction from this man. For decades, very devout Catholics who to this day in the laity have been talking about this and the arrogance from the Vatican down is unbearable. This arrogance has lead to what we see today from the liturgy in the mass to the lifestyle some of these men live, so much for the example of living the life of poverty Mother Teresa displayed. They no longer live there life for Christ but for themselves. For I myself am a sinner and I’m not judging there soul, but I’m certainly judging there character that they display for all to see. Heavenly Father…

  4. Sienna Sam: be forewarned that Church Militant is a horrible organization promoting teachings that are anti-thetical to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Thank God for Pope Francis who seems to one of the few sane world leaders today.

      Frank,

Thete are others Catholic news organizations and recognized individuals besides Church Militant, whose credentials surpass yours and mine, plus others together who reach the same conclusions about the Holy Father’s departures from Church teachings.

The individual featured here is a recognized scholar in the New York Archdiocese:

In addition, threr are Cdls. Burke, Mullre, Brandmueller. The list of other well-credentialed individuals goes on and on.

      Frank,

Here is another source regarding the Holy Father’s entrancement of Communist China in letting them decide on episcopal appointments within the supposed “approved” Catholic Church in China:

      https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/chinese-authorities-rip-apart-faithful-catholic-nuns-convent

The Holy Father thinks it best to “sell out” the faithful in China, despite the actions taken by the Communists since the Holy See’s agreement with that government.

  5. Totally agree with Joe D and totally disagreed with Frank!
