Diane Watson honored at Catholic Martin Luther King breakfast

Solid pro-abortion state senator ‘long-time’ Catholic

The following comes from a Jan. 8 email sent to us by a reader of Cal Catholic.

Plenty of people could be “honored” instead of the pro-death politician. What a sham.

From the breakfast website:

The 21st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Proud Bird Restaurant in Los Angeles with Leslie Sykes, ABC 7 TV News Anchor, as host. Sr. Antona Ebo, F.S.M. will give the keynote address .This year in particular, while remembering Dr. King, we will also recognize two significant milestones:

  1. Retired California State Senator Diane Watson will be honored as the first recipient of the Drum Major Award, which recognizes the life-long contributions and exemplary efforts of African American leaders in our community who demonstrate the values of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Senator Watson has served our community as an elementary school teacher and as the first African American woman to serve on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board.  She also has served as Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia and as a member of the 108th Congress. In addition, she has fought for improved health care for everyone especially women and children and has been a long time member of Transfiguration Catholic Church in Los Angeles.

From On The Issues website:
Diane Watson on Abortion

Voted NO on forbidding human cloning for reproduction & medical research.

Rated 100% by NARAL, indicating a pro-choice voting record.

  1. Looking at the lower left of the referenced breakfast website and you see the logo for the Archdiocese of LA.
    Wonder if the archbishop will show up to give Watson an award for the “Most Consistent Politician Voting for Abortion” or not?
    As a long-time member of Transfiguration Catholic Church, the pastor and Cardinal Mahoney would have known of her voting record and yet she is to be honored?
    Things haven’t changed, have they?

    • No sadly they haven’t. St. Monica’s bulletin of 1-11-15 carried the announcement of this event, and shame on them for promoting it!

      This same bulletin announced that they had taken in $392,076 in “Christmas Gifts”. Money talks while faith walks.

  2. Send a link to this article which includes her voting record at the bottom to Archbishop Gomez.
    Honoring those who support evil by any “Catholic” organization has got to stop. And it is our job to officially object to the appropriate Diocese Bishop, loudly and clearly.
    If it does not stop, evil people will continue to be elected.

    Based upon her voting record, Diane Watson is a HERETIC by Church definition (CCC 2089).
    And for her role in facilitating abortions Watson been excommunicated “latae sententiae: (CCC: 2272)

    ABORTION (which includes embryonic stem cell research): CCC: # 2271, 2272, 2274, 2322.
    SCANDAL: CCC 2326, 2286.

    Most Reverend José H. Gomez
    Archbishop of Los Angeles

    Los Angeles, CA 90010-2241
    (213) 637-7534 phone
    (213) 637-6510 fax

  3. Those who vote for a politician/candidate who supports ABORTION or EUTHANASIA may NOT receive Holy Communion.
    There is nothing proportionate in the USA today to the murder of approx. ONE MILLION innocent human beings annually.
    “WORTHINESS to RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION, General Principles” – Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict).

    Diocese Bishops, State Bishops’ Conferences, and the USCCB must make this voting REQUIREMENT very clear.
    Further, they should annually review all political Party Platforms for their own State, as well as the National Party Platforms, since these are the GOALS of each Party – specifically looking for the
    Intrinsic Evils of: Abortion, Euthanasia, Contraception, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Human Cloning, Homosexual Marriage,
    and other Mortal Sins. All sins (of commission and omission) are NOT EQUAL.

    This is the best short Voter’s Guide that I have found teaching on:
    1) Your Role as a Catholic Voter;
    2) Non-negotiables;
    3) Which political offices should I worry about;
    4) How to determine a candidates position;
    5) How not to vote;
    6) How to vote;
    7) When there is no acceptable candidate.
    (You may want to save this link for future use.)

  4. CCC: ” 907 In accord with the knowledge, competence, and preeminence which they possess, [lay people] have the right and even at times a duty
    to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church,
    and they have a right to make their opinion known to the other Christian faithful,
    with due regard to the integrity of faith and morals and reverence toward their pastors, and with consideration for the common good and the dignity of persons.”

    We all have a duty to contact our Diocese Bishop for the good of the Church.
    Each Diocese Bishop is responsible for everything “Catholic” within his own Diocese.
    Heretics should never be honored by any “Catholic” organization – and this includes evil politicians.

  5. Is the entire diocesan office asleep?! How is it possible that her name would even be submitted for such an event, let alone to be “honored”? My suggestion is that if anyone has bought a seat at this event, get your money back. If I were scheduled to go, I could not even imagine being a participant in such a farce, my stomach would be in knots, and i could not abide being there. Has she been so long in this world and so immersed in the culture of death that she is unable to discern the evil she has participated in just for a great retirement package? Doesh’t she know that for every abortion she supported with her votes, she put a noose around the neck of an unborn child, and more likely a black child, since they are the actual target for abortion? Truly a sick joke if ever there were one.

    • Watson is a good friend of Cardinal Roger Mahony, who is also honored with the title “Emeritus”, and honored on the LA Diocese web site.
      Check out the links provided by “Cindy”.

  6. Bob Bugiada says

    What I remember most about Diane Watson was her total unprofessionalism. In a hate-filled rambling speech she castigated Mayor Richard Reardon with nothing but platitudes and hackneyed worn-out clichés. The mayor just sat silently, maintaining his dignity as she continued with her diatribe. How this woman can be honored by ANY organization, much less a Catholic one, is beyond me. Here are some letters to the editor of the Los Angeles Times on the speech: http://articles.latimes.com/1996-01-14/opinion/op-24333_1_mayor-richard-riordan-black-community-watson-share

  7. AND the EVIL influence of Cardinal Roger Mahony still permeates and disgraces the Los Angeles Diocese.

    Cardinal MAHONY pictured shaking hands with Rep. Diane WATSON (D-CA) on wiki. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

    Since official Church records made public in Court have proven that Mahony is GUILTY of aiding and abetting Priests in the Diocese of Fresno, and Stockton, and Los Angeles – regarding the abuse of Children – – –
    when is POPE FRANCIS going to STRIP MAHONY of the title of “EMERITAS”, and make certain that Mahony can no longer be in the public or have any public ministry ?

    See the LA Diocese web site for proof of Mahony’s continuing influence.

    • If the Pope is sincere about the sexual abuse of children,
      he will strip all Church titles from those guilty including those Bishops who aid and abet by moving Priests around so they can abuse again.

      And the Pope must forbid them from “public” practice of the Faith or teaching anyone. Let them lead a quiet life of penance.

      Roger Mahony (and the evil politicians he supports), still has influence in the LA Diocese, and must be stopped.

  8. Diane Watson—always an outspoken tireless advocate, champion of the culture of death. She really represented the hard Left Hollywood-West LA mob, not the poor folks in the Black community.

  9. The core problem in the Catholic Church in recent decades, and the reason for is virtual deterioration is two-fold. The betrayal by high profile Catholics who tell the world that you can commit a mortal sin, hold that mortal sin, never confess that mortal sin, still go to communion and still be called an numbered in the body of Catholics and claim to be a Catholic! The second problem (and the worst) is the non-action that coordinates with that mortal sin an that is that Bishops (USCCB)has not challenged the anti-Catholic “Catholics” thereby cooperating with them and the devil (if you still believe in one) it’s called the Sin of Omission which St. Thomas tells us is on the same level as a Sin of Comission!

  10. Clinton R. says

    Just shows that claiming to be Catholic and actually being Catholic are two very, vastly different things.

    • Kenneth M. Fisher says

      “It’s ‘Amazing’ That Faithful Catholics Are, Now Accused Of Opposing The Church”, Raymond Cardinal Burke in an interview with Hilary White for the Wanderer, January 8, 2015, pg. 3B!
      God bless, yours in Their Hearts!
      May God have mercy on an amoral Amerika and His Church!
      Viva Cristo Rey!
      Kenneth M. Fisher

  11. St. Christopher says

    Why honor Senator Watson for anything? She could represent a teaching moment for the Church. The Church should know that virtue does not follow skin color. By its decision, the Catholic Church, once again, is seen as operating as a political body, rather than as the Church founded by Jesus Christ.

    Further, this “honor” brings a lie to the Church’s primary consideration of acting in a manner best intended to assist its believers in achieving salvation. Regarding Sen. Watson, this can be seen in at least two ways: (1) she continues the sad tradition of using abortion as genocide against fellow blacks (and Hispanics, too); and (2) she is a scandal to actual practicing Catholics by showing that her murderous record on abortion is accomplished by a “long time member of Transfiguration Catholic Church in Los Angeles.”

    Senator Watson is nothing more than a Mario Cuomo type of Catholic politician. Say and do what you need to get elected time and time again. Be the “Good Nazi” and things will be fine. The Catholic Church leaders are at their most base when honoring a black woman as an example of achievement for her race, when she should be highlighted as a figure of tragic hypocrisy and moral defeat.

  12. This is what happens when the USCCB’s organizations – CCHD, Catholic Charities, and CRS take approx. $63 MILLION dollars annually in Federal Grants to do the work of the Federal Government.

    Then these USCCB charities kowtow to those in power (at every level of government), and honor them at the spiritual expense of the Faithful and the Catholic Church.

    Of course Watson was very close to still active Cardinal Roger Mahony and his political positions. This is an ongoing disgrace.

  13. The Church should remind her and all who praise her work that Black (unborn) Lives Matter. Black (unborn) Lives Matter dammit. Woe to the those that call abortion good.

  14. Jesus said ‘ You will know them by their fruits. How can anyone claim these represent the Roman Catholic Church?
