The Carmelites first came to La Mesa in 1938; the current chapel was built in 1966. The Carmelites are a traditional community, and wear full habits (visit http://www.carmeldcj.org/). The community was founded by a Polish nun and convert to the Catholic faith, Blessed Maria Teresa of St. Joseph (1855-1938), and combines contemplative prayer and apostolic service. The Little Flower Haven is one of four convents of the sisters.
