Whitman pivots on Prop 8

The following comes from a February 26 posting on the Sacramento Bee’s Capitol Alert site.

Former  GOP gubernatorial hopefully Meg Whitman has changed course on California’s ban on same-sex marriage, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8 as unconstitutional.

Whitman, who supported Proposition 8 and vowed to defend the voter-approved law against legal challenges during her 2010 gubernatorial bid, is one of dozens high-profile Republicans who signed a legal brief supporting gay marriage that will be submitted this week, according to The New York Times.

The Hewlett-Packard chief executive issued a statement through her LinkedIn page saying that she has come “to embrace same-sex marriage after a period of careful review and reflection.”

“As a candidate for governor three years ago, I supported Proposition 8. At the time, I believed the people of California had weighed in on this question and that overturning the will of the people was the wrong approach,” she wrote. “The facts and arguments presented during the legal process since then have had a profound impact on my thinking.”

She wrote in the statement that the brief she signed argues there is “no legitimate, fact-based reason for providing different legal treatment of committed relationships between same-sex couples.” Allowing same-sex marriage to stand in California, she wrote, will “strengthen our nation as a whole.”

  1. Weird but True: Dr. Edward Allred donated $2,500 to Proposition 8.

    He who said:

“Population control is too important to entrust to some right-wing, pro-life types. Take the recent influx of Hispanic immigrants: Their lack of respect for democracy and social order is frightening. I hope I can do something to stem that tide. I’d set up a[n abortion] clinic in Mexico for free if I could. Maybe one in Calexico would help. The survival of our society could be at stake.…The Aid to Families With Dependent Children program is the worst boondoggle ever created. When a sullen black woman can decide to have a baby and get welfare and food stamps and become a burden to all of us it’s time to stop. In parts of South Los Angeles having babies for welfare is the only industry the people have.”

    – Dr. Edward Allred (multi-millionaire, former owner of Family Planning Associates, once upon a time the largest independent abortion clinic chain), quoted in “Doctor’s Abortion Practice Lucrative,” The San Diego Union, 10/12/80, pp. A-3, 17.

  2. The republicans are still licking their wounds from the last election and are trying to re-brand the party. I’ll have nothing to do with it! God save us all!

    • JJ, if you are Catholic you are required to VOTE – for the lessor of the evils.
You may not vote for a pro-abortion candidate and still receive Holy Communion.

      • Your Fellow Catholic says:

Sandy – Thank God most Catholic people understand that politicians have a very complex set of policies to enact or change or enforce. They understand that the world is a complicated place. They understand that statements like “catholics may not vote ‘thus and such’ betrays the moral obligations that we all have to use our minds and hearts to examine our consciences and vote according to that conscience, and to ignore people who claim to know who claim to have “the answer”.

        • Kenneth M. Fisher says:

Surprise, surprise, NOT, so called “Your Fellow Catholc” is in favor of overturning Prop. 8.

          Pray for his Eternal soul,

          Kenneth M. Fisher

        • John Feeney says:

Your Fellow Catholic, are you another Catholic telling us that you vote for baby killers?

        • So YFC, What does your conscience say? If it favors gay marriage and promotes homosexual acts, then it is an ill-formed conscience, not consistent with Catholic Teachings.

  3. Laurettte Elsberry says:

There is no such thing as same-sex marriage. It is same-sex lust – and that’s all it can be in the eyes of God.

  4. Larry from RI says:

Former GOP gubernatorial hopeful Meg Whitman has changed course on California’s ban on same-sex marriage, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8 as unconstitutional.

The removal of homosexuality from the list of perversions by the American Psychiatric Association should be reviewed after they were bullied by the homosexuals. The reason why it was removed should be
reexamined. Sodomy is still “the biggest crime against nature and nature’s Creator.

  5. All of the politicians mentioned are not Catholic.
But – when most US CARDINALS & BISHOPS do NOT do their own job – teaching not only in word but by actions, our moral beliefs will continue to lose ground within society, by many of those who profess to be “Catholic” and non-Catholics alike.
Although the Democratic Party is the Party of Death by their own adopted platform, there is nothing to stop the Republican Party from turning toward popular opinions.

Bishops need to enforce Canon 915 to stop SACRILEGE against the “Real Presence” –
” Can. 915 Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin
are not to be admitted to holy communion. ”

Bishops need to enforce Canon 1399 – excommunicate ab homine those Catholics who are publically obsitnate in sin including Catholic politicians. –
” Can. 1399 In addition to the cases established here or in other laws,
the external violation of a divine or canonical law can be punished by a just penalty only when the special gravity of the violation demands punishment and there is an urgent need to prevent or repair scandals. ”

CCC: ” 2286 Scandal can be provoked by laws or institutions, by fashion or opinion.
Therefore, they are guilty of scandal who establish laws or social structures leading to the decline of morals and the corruption of religious practice,
or to social conditions that, intentionally or not, make Christian conduct and obedience to the Commandments difficult and practically impossible.
This is also true of business leaders who make rules encouraging fraud, teachers who provoke their children to anger, or manipulators of public opinion who turn it away from moral values. ”
    (Also see CCC 2284, 2285, 2326; and 1 Cor 5:11-13)

Those Bishops who do NOT do their OWN job cause: confusion, scandal, heresy, schism, relativism and secularism to flourish.

There are NO GOOD EXCUSES when it comes to Saving Souls for eternity.

  6. How sad Meg, especially for those who supported you in your quixotic run for Governor.

You say there is “no legitimate, fact-based reason for providing different legal treatment.” What about the fact that these two sets of relationships are different themselves, Meg? Why should we treat different things the same legally? How does that strengthen things?

Or then are you going to pay the janitors at HP your salary too and let them live in your home, why treat them differently, Meg…? Lol.

    • Mark from PA says:

JoJo, the janitors should be paid a living wage and they should also be treated with respect. Just because someone does a job where they get their hands dirty does not mean that these people shouldn’t be treated as equal under the law to people who are wealthy. They deserve to live in nice homes too, to have adequate food and medical care. All human life is precious and deserving of respect.

      • PA no one “deserves” to live in a nice home, that is to be earned

      • Mark, what is your definition of a “nice home”?

You can donate your time and/or money to groups who build one room homes with a concrete floor and a roof that doesn’t leak in third world nations for a family who would be beyond grateful to have one. Would this fit your definition of a “nice home”? It sure fits these families definition of one.

      • But Mark, “separate is not equal.” No “second class citizen” status. Full “equality” requires Meg to pay her janitors not one cent les than herself…and to see to it that they live in a mansion like she does.

“There is no legitimate fact-based reason for different legal treatment.”

        LOL sarcasm alert!

  7. Jesus said “whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven”.(Matt 12:22-32) In context , they have just accused Him of driving out demons by the power of the prince of demons – in other words they have just called good evil and we now call evil good. How can we be forgiven?

  8. Maryanne Leonard says:

Support of same-sex marriage is becoming nearly universal among American corporations because it is good for business – period. The Almighty means nothing alongside the almighty American dollar to the corporations that are prospering here in this highly blessed land far beyond the dreams of businessmen and women throughout human history, all around the world. At the altar of the American dollar, many a moral premise has been sacrificed. Fears of Judgment Day have diminished at a rate equal to that of fear of The Lord.

    • Maryanne Leonard,

      Excellent!

“At the altar of the American dollar, many a moral premise has been sacrificed. Fears of Judgment Day have diminished at a rate equal to that of fear of The Lord.”

  9. Fr. Richard Perozich says:

All evil activity is linked: abortion, lust in all its forms. It is no surprise that she went this way being a pro abort in her politics. I did not vote for governor in the last election because all were promoting evil. Just like President Obama, this is the successive emergence of one more evil in the whole package of lust.

  10. Another one publicly bites the dust. Soon there will only be a remnant holding on to the Truth, the Life and the Way. Stand strong and stand together, because persecution is on the way.

    • Kenneth M. Fisher says:

      lisag,

Wake up! Persecution is already here and increasing daily!

God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
      Kenneth M. Fisher

  11. Maryanne Leonard has hit it squarely on the peg! Meg’s “epiphany” re “gay marriage” is, to me, as phony as a three-dollar bill. It’s really ALL ABOUT THE (FILTHY) MONEY! And this whole article also brings up one of my emerging dictums concerning politics: NEVER put into office of any kind an overpampered, overpriveleged billionaire, whether Rebublican or demoncrat. (especially demoncrats.) They’ll stick it to we the citizens usually in short order. Witness Bloomberg in New York. And he’s a demoncrat. Meg’s nothing more than a R.I.N.O. REPUB, WHICH TRANSLATES TO DEMONCRAT LITE.

We desperately need a THIRD PARTY in this country, and fast! In addition to our national accelerating descent over the fiscal (AND MORAL ) cliff, we’re becoming more like the U.K. and Italy, among others, in our manic desire to emulate european socialism. 1984 in all its implication awaits us if we don’t rouse ourselves from our catatonic national sleep, which consists mainly of the “boiling frog” syndrome. One more thing: IMPEACH OBAMA! Holy Mary, Queen of martyrs, pray for us. GOD BLESS, MARKRITE

  12. Mrs. Whitman is a presbyterian. I am not surprised. By their nature they are all over the board. 30,000+ protestant denominations and splitting exponentially.

“In those days there is no king in Israel; each doth that which is right in his own eyes.”

This is our great grace and mercy to be under St. Peter, the vicar of the One Good Shepherd, who is not a hired shepherd.

  13. Phil Sevilla says:

Thank goodness Whitman is not the Governor. She is not principled.
This may be a political move to tee up another run in the future.
    She’d be another Wilson/Schwarzenegger Republican.

    • Rick DeLano says:

What is needed now is a civil war within the Republican Party.

Let us at long last fight.

If the Meg Whitmans and Arnold Schwarzennegers of the Republican Party prevail, then we can have nothing more to do with it.

As an earlier poster noted, it will be a matter of moral obligation to explore a third party option.

But as for the Megs and Arnolds, let us at long last fight, and inform the Republican Establishment that they will have a civil war on their hands which will reduce the Republican Party to an insignificant footnote, should they embrace these heralds of betrayal of our fundamental values.

They are worried about their voting share?

They have no idea what is coming should they lose the religious vote.

    • Meg is not principled? Fortunately we have a devout, principled Catholic for governor!

  14. Long ago the Republican Party embraced the sodomite “Log Cabin Republicans”. One day soon the party will simply merge with the Democratic Party. That could be a bad day for the Democratic Party, as having Republicans in its midst might drive away the support of the bishops.

  15. Mbûkû Kanyau Mbithûka says:

How exactly does sodomy strengthen a Nation?

  16. Paul Joseph says:

Thank God that I voted for neither Brown nor Whitman, but a truly pro-life (third-party) candidate. Whitman’s craven betrayal on Prop 8 re-confirms the wisdom of voting one’s conscience. If the Republicans want my vote, then they will have to field genuinely pro-life, anti-sodomy candidates. If not, then I will even chew off my own paw to escape their trap. And I am not alone….

  17. Jim McCrea says:

    Tick, tock. Tick, tock, folks.

Slowly but surely, day by day, state by state …..

    • Rick DeLano says:

      What…..bankruptcy?

    • Thomas More says:

This is the same Jim McCrea who has written letters to the editor of the Catholic Voice supporting so-called same-sex marriage. It’s sad, really. He’s Catholic but doesn’t know what marriage is. Hey, Jim…could you do me a favor and explain to everyone how two men would consummate their “marriage” so as to form a two-in-one-flesh union?

      • So what’s up CCD Editor? I thought this web site’s mission was to educate, inform and promote the Faith. Instead, you continue to allow comments from activist homosexuals whose message is not only anti-Catholic but promotes scandal. If I want gay rants aimed at destroying the Catholic Church, I can turn on the TV, read the newspaper or go to other web sites. With all due respect, you need to wise up.

        • Rick DeLano says:

          To the contrary.

The most powerful tool by which to defeat the gender fascists is the words which proceed out of their very own mouths.

It is true we shall have to encourage human persons to think logically again, but after all, the purpose of the Catholic faith is to bring reason into accord with Faith.

          • Rick DeLano, Clearly, you appear to have a full understanding of the Faith and I get your point. However, too many Catholics are susceptible to the lies put forth by the “gender facists,” no matter the amount of encouragement. While bringing reason into accord with the Faith is necessary, the purpose of the Catholic Faith is Salvation. The deceivers on this site appear to be “reasonable” to the poorly catechized but they want to plant their diabolical seeds in order to undermine the Faith, promote scandal and comprimise the Salvation of others. In my opinion, it is the responsibility of the editor of a CCD, as a Catholic site, to promote and sustain the Faith. I simply want this site to be a refuge for Faithful and not a toilet for the homosexualiats.

  18. All Whitman has done is roll over in her bed with the devil.

  19. Whitman says, “It makes no difference whether the marriage is between a man and woman or a woman and woman. Marriage makes society better.”

What about man and his horse?

  20. Meg is simply ignorant on this issue. No doubt HP will soon be struggling under her leadership is she thinks like this.

  21. St. Christopher says:

Ms. Whitman is not, and never was, a conservative, or a Republican. She is looking to avoid CA local embarrassment (such a problem at cocktail parties there), and to leave open the chance for a future political run or appointment. The homosexual sex lobby is very strong, particularly among the moral flatlanders in CA. They are hitting corporations and board rooms, now that they attempted to intimidate the media, religious groups, eduction, and various associations. What homosexuals do in private is between them, for purposes of a civil society. For purposes of their soul, what homosexuals sexually do — each and every time — is an affront to God, a mortal sin. Many many in the Catholic Church do not believe this and will not say it (any more than they will say that much is sinful, at all). The new Pope will need to confront this cancer, or the institution of the Church will be entirely destroyed.

    • markrite says:

……”the institution of the church will be entirely destroyed” ? say what? Maybe in a particular time and place, but not forever (or entirely). St. Christopher, have you forgotten what Jesus said? “The gates of hell shall not prevails against her,” etc. The gay mafia may have their HOUR, (Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane)) but certainly not their DAY. (The Resurrection.) Just have enough people read “The Homosexual Network” by Fr. Enrique Ruda, and “get it,” and it’s OVER for them. By the way, a copy of said book is now going, on some sites, for $800.00! Must be somethig to it. GOD BLESS AND HELP US ALL, MARKRITE

  22. Juergensen says:

“after careful review and reflection” ~ She forgot to add “prayerfully”.

  23. Anton L. Seidl says:

Ms. Whitman was a RINO. We all knew it. Jerry Brown is an apostate. We were between a rock and a hard place.
With respect to the state budget, she would have been the preferred choice. Beyond that, a pox on both their houses.
