Trail Life – standards replace standards

The 2013 transition caused the second largest number of Eagle scouts in BSA history

hqdefaultThe following comes from a Sept. 23 story on World News Service.

Bruce Weatherly’s Eagle Scout rank means more to him than prestige, resumé fodder, or a chance to get a college scholarship. For the 18-year-old, reaching Eagle was about honoring his father’s memory.

His outdoorsy, rock-climbing, woods-hiking, and kayaking father died in 2009. Bruce’s mother Lauri Weatherly wanted her sons still to experience male leadership: “Boy scouting in general would be considered, in my eyes, their father.”

After the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) decided last year to accept openly gay scouts, scouting dissidents created Trail Life USA. With that decision came tension for families, particularly when sons were close to gaining the prestigious Eagle Scout rank, a symbol of ultimate achievement that scouts often list on college applications and use to win scholarships. Six-month-old Trail Life has to contend with that legacy: It offers an “achievement transfer” for boys, but BSA has trademarked the terms “scout” and the names of ranks. BSA has the Eagle Scout; Trail Life has the Freedom Award.

Bruce had written an essay opposing the admission of gay scouts, but he was also two months away from completing his six-month-long Eagle Scout project when his BSA troop in John’s Creek, Ga., disbanded. He had to decide whether to move to another troop and complete his Eagle, or take his Christian principles with him to Trail Life. His mom thought leaving without achieving Eagle rank would be “like dropping out of the race when you see the finish line before you,” but she encouraged Bruce to pray and then make the painful choice. He decided to stay in.

What about others?

In June, at a Trail Life camp in western North Carolina, troop leaders from North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama sat around a wooden picnic table. Nearly 100 boys attending the camp were on a hunt for one boy in hiding, in a game called “Saving Private Bryan.” Meanwhile, the leaders told me how many of their boys had “rushed” to get the Eagle during the transitional time after the BSA decision. (In 2013, the second-largest number of boys in BSA history became Eagle Scouts.)

Luke Van Cleave, Bruce’s former BSA scoutmaster and now Trail Life Troop 317 leader, said seven of his former scouts moved to another BSA troop: Five of those boys were close to their Eagle, and two were their younger brothers. One Troop 317 boy, 16-year-old Eagle Scout John Jung, stayed in the Boy Scouts while joining Trail Life because of friends and the potential for further leadership roles in BSA. He said in Boy Scouts “they stack you up on merit badges till lunch.”

Without the Eagle Scout designation, Trail Life is emphasizing that its boys will have not sashes but “standards”—wooden staffs that serve as part walking stick, part saber, like what shepherds and bishops and even Moses carried. Trail Life co-founder John Stemberger said a standard is “a little more masculine than a cloth and a patch.” The Trail Life website states the Freedom Award crest includes a “shield of faith,” a “sword of the spirit,” “trinity peaks,” a “mighty stag,” and “crossed keys,” all symbolic and referring to Bible passages….

  1. The BSA can never redefine manliness. They can encourage or reject it. That’s all. They have chosen the latter.

  2. MIchael McDermott says:

The big question is whether Trail Life will receive the same protection from Gaystapo Thought Police Pogroms as the boy scouts threw away when they decided to pander to homo-anal coprophile behaviors as being ‘moral’.

The USSC Case of ‘Boy Scouts vs Dale’ had ensured the organization could protect boys from damage caused by physically harmful, pathological disease spreading behaviors common to the ‘Conga Line of Buggery’ – and ban those who engaged in / promoted such perversions from troops.

Bowing to Gaystapo pressure tactics ranging from Targeting the ‘enemy’ (like the ‘Lavender Liberal’ Stalkers list created to track and retaliate against all who supported CA Proposition 8) – the ‘boy scouts’ caved in on their hard won Constitutional Freedom, for the modern equivalent of 30 pieces of silver.

Whether these protections will still apply to Trail Life (another purportedly Catholic group formed – but used the Term ‘Scouts” and got a nasty cease and desist Trademark infringement letter) and similar groups looking to make up the moral vacuum from the implosion of scouting – will probably spark expensive legal fights.

I used to be proud to say I was a Scout (Life Rank – one below Eagle) but will no longer have anything to do with the organization, and like the girl scouts (who pandered long ago) will not endorse or buy any of their products – including cookies.

This is the Win/Win with Sin Pogrom for the Gaystapo – and the Frothy Mixers of the Abomination like POTUS Down Low Soetoro & his Bio-Terrorist Election Fraudster Dan ‘ The Savage Lickspittle’ – whose fundamental transformation of post weimar amerika is an Alinskyite dream come true.,

Their ability to turn formerly loyal citizens (including Vets such as I) away from support for the Military and Scouting is as much a victory for them as actually destroying the organizations from within.

Doing Both by enforcing such Orwellian ‘Double Think’ against the hated Hetero-Patriarchy makes the Double ‘happy’.

Meanwhile back at Elton’s ‘Brown Dirt Cowboy’ STD Ranch – Matt Barber at Townhall & WSJ reports:
“Projections have shown that if current trends continue, half of all gay and bisexual men will be HIV-positive by age 50.”
    – The Wall Street Journal, Sept. 25, 2014

…based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest assessment of the homosexual lifestyle. The WSJ report further warns:

“Gay and bisexual men represent an estimated 2 percent of the U.S. population but more than half of all people living with HIV and 66 percent of new HIV infections.
They are the only population group in the United States for which HIV infections are rising.”

What do you say of an adult or adults who, for selfish political reasons, encourage sexually confused children to adopt a sex-centric identity and lifestyle laced with a 50-50 chance of HIV infection?

I’d say they’re guilty of child abuse. Adults are supposed to protect children from touching the red-hot stove, not push their face down on it.

    This is true hate.

      • Oh . . . and equally important before I forget: ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.

  4. Boy Scouts are a force for good. The new rule won’t change that much, in that most gay scouts will remain below the radar, except in places like San Francisco where they may even be the majority in some troops.

Boy Scouts new standard that Scout leadership roles would be limited to straight scouts only is correct. After all, who would place a heterosexual male Scout leader around teenage Girl Scouts? Same problem as gay scoutmasters around boys….sexual tension.

Plans are in the making for an event in Washington, DC in the summer or fall of 2015 that would honor our first round of Freedom Rangemen and their families.

All Trail Life USA members would be welcome to attend this weekend event that is likely to include a Friday night Trail Mixer, Saturday morning Prayer Breakfast, and Saturday night Freedom Banquet and Award Ceremony.
