The following comes from a September 2 USCCB statement:

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) submitted comments September 2 to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Science Policy on the proposed authorization of federally-funded human/animal chimera research. Comments objecting to that proposal were submitted by Anthony Picarello, USCCB associate general secretary and general counsel, and Michael Moses, associate general counsel.

The comments outlined the USCCB’s objections to the newly-proposed research guidelines: “the bottom line is that the Federal government will begin expending taxpayer dollars on the creation and manipulation of new beings whose very existence blurs the line between humanity and animals such as mice and rats. In doing so, the government is ignoring the fact that federally funded research of this kind is prohibited by Federal statute and is also grossly unethical.”

Human/animal chimera research results in “beings who do not fully belong to either the human race or the host animal species.”

“Herein lies the key moral problem involved in this proposal, beyond the already grave problem of exploiting human embryos as cell factories for research,” they wrote. “For if one cannot tell to what extent, if any, the resulting organism may have human status or characteristics, it will be impossible to determine what one’s moral obligations may be regarding that organism.”

The comments noted that Catholic morality allows for “the respectful use of animals in research that can benefit humanity. But because of the unique dignity of the human person, there are limits to what can morally be done….”

  1. The government didn’t listen to the Church about same-sex pseudo marriage, flatly rejects what the Church states about abortion, disregards the Church’s concerns about mandating contraceptive coverage in health insurance policies, and seeks to require churches and schools to continue to employ LGBTQs who advocate what is contrary to the Church’s faith.

What makes the USCCB think that the government will heed its objections to chimera research?

When will the bishops recognize that American government and culture are largely post-Christian and that it’s time for the Church, her bishops, her faithful and her institutions to adopt the mentality of people living in hostile, enemy territory?

    • we are the Church Militant, and the bishops are voicing their stand against an increasingly evil world, even as they full well know the federal govt politicians couldn’t care less, never the the less they must publicly voice their position, because remaining silent is to condone.

There is no regard for any law these days. The supposed leaders in Washington, D.C. do not follow the law in any area.

Guess who ‘approved’ the federal funding requested for the NIH proposal for unethical chimera experiments? The POTUS = BO. Why doesn’t the article mention this? Where did he get the funding from? (Since BO did not go thru congress in either house or senate.) Did BO adjust (raid) one of the Health care budgets again, like Obamacare or Medicare? Is this really where we want our federal tax dollars to go? Dear God deliver us. Vote them out!

This is one major reason why the judgement of almighty God is on America. Man is trying to play the role of God. America turn back to God and convert and repent before it is too late. Only a loving and merciful God could save your country from the road that you are taking. America Pray Pray Pray and Repent!

  6. This science teacher suggests we keep our heads on straight. Attempting to produce a chimera is hideously immoral, but the idea that you’d get some live, functioning creature that was part-man part baboon a la Dr. Moreau is nearly impossible, because the chromosomes would never match up. You might get a baboon with some human cells (in patches) or a baboon with cells that could produce some human proteins, but that’s as bad as it would get.

The Donor Sibling Registry (DSR) was created in September 2000, by Wendy Kramer and her son, Ryan. Certain that other donor offspring would have the same curiosity as Ryan about his genetic origins – yet also knowing that sadly, no public outlet existed for mutual consent contact between people born from anonymous sperm donation, this site was started as the logical next step to making those connections.

All over the world, it should be TOTLLY ILLEGAL– to mess with God’s perfect designs, in Nature, which He created! The ecosystem will suffer terribly, if all the crazy scientists are allowed to tamper with God’s natural design! All animals were created by God, for His specific purposes, with a perfect natural design! Animals were NOT created for crazy, diabolic “research projects,” in mankind’s HORRIFIC Science Labs! Our planet is already almost ruined, with the misuse of Modern Science, since the beginning of the 20th century! If our planet is someday totally ruined– then human beings, can no longer inhabit this earth! That is NOT what God naturally designed, for us!
