The day the sun danced

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the “Miracle of the Sun”

The day of October 13, one hundred years ago, will always be remembered as the day the sun danced and how that miracle led many to believe in the Marian apparitions at Fatima.   In 1917, Europe and most of the world were still intensely involved in the Great War that had been raging since 1914. The total number of military and civilian causalities amounted to more than 41 … [Read more...]

Cardinal Francis Arinze: Fatima reveals Hell is real

"Hell is not something that was invented in the Vatican,” says Nigerian prelate

People who disregard Hell as a place “invented” by the Church to scare people into acting a certain way need to listen to the message from Our Lady of Fatima, said Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria. She showed three shepherd children that Hell exists, and is not empty, he added. “There are people who don't want us to talk of Hell. But Hell is not something that was invented … [Read more...]

Pope Francis says he’s suspicious of ongoing Medjugorje apparitions

Holy Father distinguishes between first apparitions and ongoing appearances: "I prefer the Madonna as Mother, our Mother, and not a woman who’s the head of an office, who every day sends a message at a certain hour."

Asked by journalists about the alleged appearance of the Virgin Mary at Medjugorje, Pope Francis said the original apparitions more than three decades ago deserve further study, but voiced doubt in the supposed ongoing visions. He stressed the need to distinguish between the two sets of apparitions, referencing a report submitted to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine … [Read more...]

Fatima and the conspiracy theories

We consecrated Russia - but did we do it wrong?

The following comes from a February 28 The Catholic Thing article by Howard Kainz. Full-length version in link. The 1917 apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three children at Fátima (ending in October of that year with the greatest historical public miracle before 70,000 observers) offer us without doubt a formidable example of Our Lady’s loving intervention, to warn the world … [Read more...]

Praying for a full church

From the pastor’s laptop

The following comes from a Nov. 19 posting on the blog of Father Joseph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco. Last Sunday in this space I was moaning over our mostly-empty Masses. But I guess I could see the church as three-quarters empty, or I could see it as one-quarter full! The other day I was again praying in the church with Father  Driscoll and … [Read more...]
