Less than two weeks before a potentially tense and diplomatically delicate meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, President Trump has apparently settled on nominating Callista Gingrich, the wife of Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, as the United States ambassador to the Holy See, according to two people close to the president.

The idea of nominating Ms. Gingrich first became public in January, and during the transition Mr. Trump half-jokingly said he was intrigued by the idea of picking Ms. Gingrich because it could also get Mr. Gingrich, with whom he has a hot-and-cold relationship, out of his hair, according to one of the people with knowledge of Mr. Trump’s remarks.

Ms. Gingrich, a member of the choir at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, played a critical role in Mr. Gingrich’s conversion to Catholicism. But she also played a role in breaking up his second marriage, according to Mr. Gingrich’s ex-wife and former adviser, Marianne Gingrich. The couple divorced in 1999.

  1. Oh this is lovely but not surprising. This appointment is an obvious swipe at Pope Francis and his more moderate positions which are an anathema to the President.

    • I find this comment rather distasteful. This apparent fawning for intrigue (“an obvious swipe”), the oh-so-sublte snide at the Holy Father (“his more moderate positions”), and the almost glaring patronizing of a political figure at the expense of one’s supposed spiritual father (“an anathema to the President”) are quite unbecoming of a professed Catholic. After having read those two sentences I asked myself: “why, who is in fact Harold’s “pope”? The elected Vicar of Christ or The Donald?). Judging from the comment it’s seems to be the latter.

      • Anonymous says:

The author of the heretical “Amoris Laetitia,” is no “spiritual father,” and “The Donald” is no true American President, no “father to his nation,” either! Self-serving hypocrites!

  2. Other than a surname, her qualifications to be Ambassador might be. . . ???
President Trump has plenty of hair should Speaker Gingrich choose to stay involved in it.

  3. Your Fellow Catholic says:

People seem to forget that she engaged in a 6 year affair with Gingrich while he was still married to his wife. Or was it his second wife? And was this the wife that he delivered divorce papers to, while she was in the hospital on her death bed?

    • You need to familiarize yourself with the concept of primary sources as far as ” evidence,” is concerned. The whole “death bed” meme is garbage.

    • Anonymous says:

So the new age San Francisco Puritans whose own personal lives might best undergo self-examination readily pull out the long knives for Callista Gingrich.

“Rabbi, we caught this woman in the act of adultery, and according to the Law of Moses, she must be stoned.” (Jn. 8:4-5)

    • Anonymous says:

“Fellow Catholic,” have you ever grievously sinned, committed adultery, let’s say, tons of times, like Gingrich (and his present wife, too)– and then, repented (or else, joined the Catholic faith, finally– with correct marriage vows to her, too????) Well, what did they do, next– kick you out of church?? Is that what you’re after? Spiteful and mean, aren’t ya! Not very “Catholic!”

    • YFC .. The biggest problem I see is not what she may have done in the past but her ongoing public (and maybe self) image as a materialist. (Go ask Tiffiny’s) Being an optomist, maybe Pope Francis can by example as well as influence reform her.

    • Your Fellow Catholic says:

You all crack me up. Trump is sending a woman who is by Church definition, an active adulteress, to be our representative to the Catholic Church, and here you are attacking the messenger.

      • Anonymous says:

Then, stone her, according to your law, the Law of Moses (Jn 8:5)..

We didn’t know you were inclined to the Torah and have rejected the NT.

        • Your Fellow Catholic says:

You never say that to others while I get constantly attacked on this site. Please, hypocrisy, show Thy face.

  4. Jon: so one cannot be a dedicated, professed and thinking Catholic? Our critical faculties are a gift from God. The post by Your Fellow Catholic is quite illuminating.

    • Anne T. says:

One thing Jon never does is tell anyone that so-called same-sex marriage is wrong. He blasts away at those who say it is wrong, but never ever tells YFC or C&H it is wrong. I am not condoning what Gingrich did, but some people on here need to clean up their own houses because they go worrying about the houses of others. Someone else’s sins do not excuse our own.

      • For the record Anne T., I have never “blasted” anyone who has said that same-sex marriage is wrong because I believe it is indeed wrong.

        • Anne T. says:

Thank you for finally saying it. I meant that before you corrected others but not those who were in such relationships.

I believe single people have the right to give their property and healthcare over to whomever they choose, but two single men or two single women have no right to “marry” one another.

  5. This is really spurious reporting w a nasty edge from a progressive (heterodox) source. Gingrich n Trump r allies not ” hot n cold.” Francis is a Marxist, those who don’t understand this need to revisit civics 101. As a full time journo I am getting REALLY tired of Catholics drinking the anti-president Kool Aid rap and the Deep State’s attempted coup.

My goodness, Obama HATED Catholics and even sued the Little Sisters. He saw abortion as sacramental, so pls spare me the anti Trump venom.

  6. the diplomatic service of the holy see is one of the oldest in existence. vatican embassies perform important functions throughout the world in representing catholic interests. that said, it must be asked whether an on-site physical representative from a particular country to the Holy See is necessary. if the US government has questions, it seems it could approach the papal nuncio in residence at the embassy, or the head of the american bishops. in US history, there was no official rep until 1933, appointed, perhaps, in view of preparations for world war ii and an awareness of america’s coming deeper involvement.

  7. Bohemond says:

YFC calling out other peoples moral failings is quite laughable… if the ambassador was a flaming homosexual YFC would be all aglow ….

  8. I recall our Lord saying: “To he who has not sinned, let him cast the first stone”. Our Lord also said something to the order: ‘Beware of how ye judge, lest you be judged’. There are a lot of judgmental people that comment on this website. Note that doesn’t mean we can’t discriminate the difference between right and wrong as that is different from judging others. For Jesus also said: “You will know them by their fruits”. and “A good tree doesn’t yield bad fruit, nor does a bad tree yield good fruit”. So beware of the fine line between.

    • Anne T. says:

Sometimes we have to judge, especially to know who really needs our help, and who are just stealing our money for corrupt purposes. The Lord meant we should give fair, just and impartial judgment and not be doing the same things ourselves. The passage “Judge not that ye be not judged” needs to be read in its total context .

I was once on a jury that had to put a man in jail after he hit a car while intoxicated. Because of that I am very careful how much alcohol I imbibe and make sure I do not drive under the influence.

  9. Bohemond says:

YFC, if the choice for the ambassador was flaming homosexual you would be so happy..and cheering about it…

  10. Your Fellow Catholic says:

I accept your nomination to be US Ambassador to the Vatican. When do I start?

    • Anonymous says:

Wait a minute, since you go Torah on Callista Gingrich, then certainly what does Leviticus or Deuteronomy say about your life choices? You really don’t understand?

Correction: A public adulterer and Freemason is appointing the former public adulterer / concubine wife of a public adulterer
and Freemason as ambassador to the Vatican. Check.
