Our Lady of Solitude Chapel, Tonopah, exterior

Mass times Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. (check the online calendar for changes to the schedule). Visitors are welcome to attend Mass and visit the chapel, but because it is a monastery, other sacraments should be received at parishes of the Diocese of Phoenix. The chapel is open for mass in the mornings, but it closes daily 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It re-opens to visitors 2 to 4:30 p.m. The sisters say that Google maps and GPS provide poor directions, so email them for accurate directions at desertnuns@msn.com. Be prepared to travel over six miles of dirt roads.

Names of priests The monastery is served by visiting priests.

Parking No problem.

Additional observations Our Lady of Solitude Chapel is the church for the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration (PCPA). The community’s abbess, Mother Marie Andre, was originally a Poor Clare of the Perpetual Adoration in Hanceville, Alabama, a community begun by Mother Angelica. Bishop of Phoenix Thomas Olmsted welcomed the community to his diocese in 2005. The community’s focus is adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The sisters live on a 40-acre site in the heart of the desert, about an hour west of Phoenix. The chapel seats 150; it’s a beautiful chapel in the desert, built for the sisters by a benefactor (watch the dedication of the chapel below). There are four professed sisters and a few others in formation; the sisters, who wear the full habit, work and pray throughout the day at the site. Visitors are welcome to come to the site on retreat; parish and school groups visit the site for days of fellowship and prayer.
