The Road Goes Ever On: Life, Love, and Learning in Tolkien’s Middle-Earth
Dean Marshall

Sat., November. 22

10 to Noon

The hidden and not-so-hidden Catholic elements of The Lord of the Rings.

Are stories such as Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings simply tales that one man wanted to write down and publish to become famous? Of course not, but what is the deeper meaning of Tolkien’s work? What can we learn from his writings? In this introductory course to the core Middle-Earth stories, we will look at some of the essentially Catholic elements of Tolkien’s work, examining not only his stories, but the man himself and the environment in which his tales found their genesis. Within Middle-Earth, we will discover what it means to find one’s vocation, to love God and neighbor, and why these tales are as applicable to our lives today as they were to the lives of those who experienced them when the first edition of The Fellowship of the Ring was published sixty years ago.

Some familiarity with these may be helpful but is not strictly necessary: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (print version), The Silmarillion, The Hobbit (print version), and The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien

Dean Marshall holds a B.A. in philosophy with high honors as well as several graduate units in theology from Mount Angel Seminary; his senior paper examined morality in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Dean is completing his Master’s in Education, focusing on literacy and assisting students with emotional disturbances and other at-risk factors. A convert to the Catholicism from the New Age Movement and Wicca, he continues to learn new things about the faith every day and enjoys spending time in the Sierras, hanging out with family and friends, and working on two major writing projects. He currently serves as the English/Language Arts teacher at St. Isidore Catholic School in Yuba City.

Ways to Celebrate  Christmas

Auxiliary Bishop

Myron J. Cotta

Saturday December. 6

10 to Noon
It’s that time of year already?!

Yes, it has snuck up on us again.”Keep Christ in Christmas” isn’t just a bumper sticker. And that challenge seems to intensify each year. Increased activities, commitments, and unrealistic expectations attempt to destroy the peace and joy of Advent and Christmas.

Bishop Cotta will present ways to renew this season in your home, your family, and your heart. Spend  Saturday morning, December 6, with Bishop Cotta and enjoy a blessed Advent as we await the joyful birth of Our Lord Jesus.

___________
Auxiliary Bishop Myron J. Cotta

Appointed by Pope Francis on January 24, 2014, Most Reverend Myron J. Cotta was ordained as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento on March 25, 2014, as the fifth Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento.  Born and raised in the community of Dos Palos, Merced County, where he grew up on a dairy farm, Bishop Cotta entered St. John’s College Seminary in Camarillo, California, in 1980. He finished his undergraduate studies and continued at the major seminary, where he completed his theological studies, receiving his Master’s Degree in Divinity. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Fresno on Sept. 12, 1987, and served for 15 years in a variety of roles including Vicar General, Moderator of the Curia, Vicar for Clergy, Director of Continuing Education of the Clergy, Supervisor of the Safe Environment Program, and Director of the Propagation of the Faith.  He was named Chaplain to His Holiness on March 23, 2002, and Prelate of Honor in January 2009. Upon the death of Bishop Steinbock of Fresno in 2010, Bishop Cotta was elected by the Diocesan College of Consultors as the Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese of Fresno until 2012 when Bishop Armando Ochoa assumed leadership of the Diocese.  In addition, he speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Registrations are now being accepted for the 2015 Conference put on by The Latin Mass: The Journal of Catholic Culture and Tradition and Keep the Faith. The theme for this year’s conference isThe Crisis of Leadership in the Catholic Church.”

The stated goal of The Latin Mass magazine is to be the intellectual arm of Catholics who are working for the return of the Church to tradition and authentic organic development. This conference is for all Catholics, but especially for those committed to the timeless spiritual treasures of the traditional Mass.

The California ProLife Legislative Banquet is our annual salute to legislators who have taken a stand for those who cannot defend their own life. The principal purpose of the law is to protect the vulnerable and we, like the rest of the pro-life movement desire to see those protections restored once again.

Make America REALLY Great – We Must Pray and Work Hard to Restore All Things in Jesus Christ!

Of course the Catholic Church IS great in her essence, for she was founded by God Himself and her soul is the Holy Ghost. But in times of crisis, such as the one we are now experiencing, her human element can falter and her visible glory and attractiveness to souls can be dimmed. As Cardinal Ratzinger wrote regarding the crisis in the liturgy: ” But when the community of faith, the world-wide unity of the Church and her history, and the mystery of the living Christ are no longer visible in the liturgy, where else, then, is the Church to become visible in her spiritual essence?

As nationalism and patriotism seem to be reviving in the political realm, the speakers at the conference will ponder how the Church, by the grace of God working through His human agents, will also revive and recover the vitality and visible greatness that converts souls.

Register for the conference

Don’t Forget: we have the
TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS
BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY MORNING.

Featuring these renowned speakers:

Father Joseph Illo
Father Joseph Illo graduated B.A. in philosophy from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (the Angelicum) in Rome. He studied at St. Joseph’s Seminary, New York and was ordained in 1991 for the Diocese of Stockton. He has been pastor of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Modesto, chaplain at Thomas Aquinas College and is currently pastor of Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco.
Father James Buckley, FSSP
Fr. Buckley is the longtime Spiritual Director for Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary, a professor of apologetics, Catholic and English literature, homiletics, and pedagogy; a retreat master, and an expert teaching on the Catholic Faith over the past 50 years. As a young man, Father felt drawn to the priesthood at an early age, and joined a minor seminary of the Salvatorians at the age of 13. After high school he continued on with his studies with the Salvatorians, being Ordained in 1965. Most of his priesthood was spent teaching and in parish assignments both in the United States and in Africa. Father always had a preference for the Traditional Latin Mass, but until the late 1980s did not have a reliable path to pursue his desire to resist all the myriad of changes that had occurred in the Church. The Fraternity emerged to offer that path, and at the invitation of Fr. Michael Irwin, FSSP, he joined the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter in 1992. Since that time, Father has enjoyed the best of both worlds, continuing to teach, while being able to practice the traditional Catholic life as a member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary staff.

Dr. Steve O’Brien
Steve O’Brien is a history professor and writes the popular Dr.O’s Blog, “Greetings From a Better Age!” (www.gfaba com). He also has a video series called “The Doctor and the Father” at Dr.O’s Channel on YouTube. He is a longtime brilliant writer for The Latin Mass magazine; he will bring a historic perspective to our conference.
Christopher A. Ferrara
Christopher A. Ferrara is President and Chief Counsel for the American Catholic Lawyers Association. He is a prolific writer for Catholic magazines and periodicals; he is active in the pro-life movement; his latest book is The Great Facade: The Regime of Novelty in the Catholic Church from Vatican II to the Francis Revolution (Second Edition).
