Citrus Heights: Acts: The Spread of  the Kingdom @ Easter's Faith Formation Center
Dec 2 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Acts:

The Spread of

the Kingdom

Ana Ramirez-Palmer

Sat., Decenber 2

10:00 – Noon

The book of Acts shows the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching, healing, and restoring outcasts in the same way that Jesus did on earth.

The Acts of the Apostles provides an historic framework for understanding the rest of the New Testament. Paul’s letters in particular come alive in a new way when they are read within the context of the Acts narrative.

See how the Gospel witness spread outward in waves, from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria, and finally to the ends of the earth.

Share with the early Christians the joys and struggles of living the life of Christ, and learn how these apply to us today.

See how the Holy Spirit guided the apostles into Truth.

Observe the way the Spirit-filled Church adapted to new cultures when proclaiming the Gospel.

Watch the seeds of Church structure and authority take root,  and see how conflicts were resolved even at that early stage.

See your place in Christ’s Church, and how you should live day-to-day as a disciple of Christ.

Ana Ramirez-Palmer

has an MA in Theology from the Augustine Institute and a Certificate in Advanced Catechetics from the University of Sacramento. Ana retired from 33 years in State government service, ten years of which were as a warden in the California prison system. She is married to Steve Ramirez-Palmer and together they serve their parish as youth ministers and catechists

Citrus Heights – An Introduction to the Writing of G.K. Chesterton @ Easter's Faith Formation Center
Dec 2 @ 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WRITING OF G.K.  CHESTERTON:

Understanding Chesterton

Spencer Roundtree

Sat., December 2

12:30 – 2:30

If you’ve tried to read Chesterton, and only made it through the first chapter, or first paragraph, or even the first page, this class is for you!

In Spencer’s introductory class, a brief biographical sketch of

G.K.Chesterton will be given, along with a review of some of the main themes/ideas found repeatedly in Chesterton’s writings.  A list of suggested introductory readings will be followed by discussion of how to prepare to profitably read his other major writings.

A handout will be made available, with some of GKC’s short quotable quotes, as well as some suggested reading for beginners and information on the American Chesterton Society and the local chapter.

Spencer Roundtree

has lived in Northern California all his life. He has been an avid reader since childhood, and a reader of the works of G.K. Chesterton for 33 years. His first exposure to the writings of G. K. Chesterton, aside from seeing him quoted in the works of others, was Chesterton’s book Orthodoxy, given to him by his friend, a Protestant pastor, in 1984. It marked a turning point in his life that ultimately brought him and his family into the Roman Catholic Church. Spencerhas been a longtime member of the American Chesterton Society, and with some friends, founded the Sacramento Chapter of the Chesterton Society in 2012. The Sacramento Chesterton Society meets the second Tuesday of each month at St. Stephen the First Martyr Catholic Parish in Sacramento. Spencer lives with his wife of 39 years, Anne, in the Placerville, CA area.

100 Years Later

Auxiliary Bishop

Myron J. Cotta

Sat., December 9

10:00 – Noon

Unable to travel to Fatima to enjoy the 100 year celebrations? Let Archbishop Cotta take you there.

Most of us were unable to attend the celebrations surrounding the place of the miraculous events at Fatima. So, Auxiliary Bishop Myron J. Cotta will recount the details of the pilgrimage he led this fall to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima.  His presentation will include his own pictures of this journey and the shrine in Portugal.

Auxiliary Bishop Myron J. Cotta
is the fifth Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento. He was ordained on March 25, 2014. He was appointed by Pope Francis on Jan. 24, 2014.  He grew up on a dairy farm in the Merced County community of Dos Palos.  He attended public and Catholic schools in Dos Palos and graduated from Dos Palos High School. He later attended West Hills Junior College and entered St. John’s College Seminary in Camarillo, Calif., in 1980 to finish his undergraduate studies and continued at the major seminary, where he finished his theological studies and received his master’s degree in divinity. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Fresno on Sept. 12, 1987. He speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese. His parish assignments included:St.Anthony, Atwater; the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, Laton; and the Shrine of Our Lady of iracles, Gustine.

From July 1999 until his appointment to the Diocese of Sacramento, he served the

Diocese of Fresno as vicar general, moderator of the curia, vicar for clergy, director of continuing education of the clergy, supervisor of the Safe Environment Program and director of the Propagation of the Faith. He was named Chaplain to His Holiness on March 23, 2002 and Prelate of Honor in January 2009.

Upon the death of Bishop John Steinbock of Fresno on Dec. 5, 2010, Bishop Cotta was elected by the Diocesan College of Consultors as the Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese of Fresno. He served as administrator from Dec. 7, 2010 until Feb. 1, 2012, when Bishop Armando Ochoa assumed leadership of the Diocese of Fresno.

with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament

Hebdomadary: Rev. Dn. James Stanley

St. John of the Cross Catholic Church

8086 Broadway

Lemon Grove, CA 91945

The disciples of John the Baptist were waiting for the Messiah. But they would not believe their teacher when he told them that Jesus was the Christ. So they are sent to meet the Lord. He shows them His miracles, proofs of His divinity, and praises His Forerunner. The antiphon of the Magnificat canticle makes this present through Gregorian chant. Come and join us for Vespers of the 2nd Sunday of Advent!
